Structure of alternating bilayers of valinomycin and chemically modified bipolar lipid from archaebacteria [5]:

__________________________

Valinomycin selectively transports potasium ions across biological membranes. This phenomenon is used in the sensors for potasium ions. The deposition of valinomycin LB films is possible, but the films appear to be unstable when keeping the samples under normal room temperature conditions. Mechanically strong and thermostable bilayers of lipid from archae introduced between the bilayers of valinomycin stabilize the film structure.
